In the 5 th of Feb, one of the coldest day in Estonian winter 2012, we went to North of Kõrvemaa to hike with snowshoes.
Just before hike we found fresh wolf pack tracks and of course we just follow them and we didnt know where we might end up.
At the beginning there was 2 wolves we followed in some point there was third one as well. The track headed quite strait to east, passed Elk, Mountain Hare, Red Fox, Wild Boar tracks.

We clip on snowshoes and follow the tracks of wolf pack.
We see the young wolves playing, adult males and female marking the territory, old preys, wolves sleeping spots on the snow, scats and lot of tracks. Its great to see all this. Looks like wolves had been at the same spot for a long time.

Lynx is one of the difficult species. Its hard to see this mammal.
But tracks are easy to follow in winter. We have snowshoes on and tracking in this way is not difficult. I found it interesting to follow one of the fresh lynx track and see how and where this animal likes to be and move.

Lynxes like to go under the dense coppice and sit top of a dead trees. They are very curious, if there are something new in the forest they like to check it over.
At the end of Feb and in March lynxes have mating time. Males mark trees, stumps with their "smelly" urine.

Winter is great time for animal tracking. Land is covered with snow and all the tracks and marks are easy to read.
We put snowshoes on, they are good to move on the snow and follow the tracks.
