Saare-, Hiiu- ja Muhumaa 2013
Seakayaking
Written by Joosep

The idea to go on a longer expedition was already born 2 years ago. At that time, the school was still in progress, army was waiting ahead and busy summer schedule made it impossible to go on a longer tour. Therefore, the idea of the expedition was delayed continuously until the Christmas of 2012. Route options were different, but the route which we finally selected was tour around the fourth and seventh largest islands in the Baltic Sea, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

The whole event will be publicated in a longer series of blog posts. The idea is to give an overview of our weekly doings in connection with preparations for trip, starting with setting a more or less accurate route and ending with complete list equipment and explanations. Later, during the tour itself, we hope to deliver news and summary of the days event every evening. If technically possible, we are also planning to capture the expedition with cameras. We also have a facebook page, where we will discuss smaller problems and topic and also carry out a contest.

The total length of the tour should be about 600 kilometers, and we have set the time limit of the expedition to 10-12 days, depending on the weather and various other factors. We will be using three single kayaks.

Many of you may question, why should three young guys go on a kayaking tour around two of the largest Estonian islands. The answer is relatively simple, the desire to put ourselves to the test in the new, more or less extreme situations. Furthermore, we want promote kayaking culture and ecotourism in Estonia. Our country has a rich and interesting coastline which offers many spectacular views and is definitely worth considering as a vacation location for anyone.

A little about ourselves. We are kayaking guides, working for a Estonian ecotourism company, 360 Degrees. I, Joosep, own a ten years long paddling experience, for  Kristjan and Riho, this years summer will be their third season. We have gone through different training courses here in Estonia under our own paddling experts.

Make sure to tune yourself in next week as well, since the we will be releasing more or less accurate route with explanations.
