The idea to go on a longer expedition was already born 2 years ago. At that time, the school was still in progress, army was waiting ahead and busy summer schedule made it impossible to go on a longer tour. Therefore, the idea of the expedition was delayed continuously until the Christmas of 2012. Route options were different, but the route which we finally selected was tour around the fourth and seventh largest islands in the Baltic Sea, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

The whole event will be publicated in a longer series of blog posts. The idea is to give an overview of our weekly doings in connection with preparations for trip, starting with setting a more or less accurate route and ending with complete list equipment and explanations. Later, during the tour itself, we hope to deliver news and summary of the days event every evening. If technically possible, we are also planning to capture the expedition with cameras. We also have a facebook page, where we will discuss smaller problems and topic and also carry out a contest.

The total length of the tour should be about 600 kilometers, and we have set the time limit of the expedition to 10-12 days, depending on the weather and various other factors. We will be using three single kayaks.

Many of you may question, why should three young guys go on a kayaking tour around two of the largest Estonian islands. The answer is relatively simple, the desire to put ourselves to the test in the new, more or less extreme situations. Furthermore, we want promote kayaking culture and ecotourism in Estonia. Our country has a rich and interesting coastline which offers many spectacular views and is definitely worth considering as a vacation location for anyone.

A little about ourselves. We are kayaking guides, working for a Estonian ecotourism company, 360 Degrees. I, Joosep, own a ten years long paddling experience, for Kristjan and Riho, this years summer will be their third season. We have gone through different training courses here in Estonia under our own paddling experts.

Make sure to tune yourself in next week as well, since the we will be releasing more or less accurate route with explanations.

At the end of February and at the beginning of March is the best time for skiing on the fast ice in West of Estonia in Väinameri. Well the skiing is one part, but also it gives us great opportunity to look for seals, who are giving a birth during this time.

Kuressaare bay is very appropriate to try kayaking first time. The whole route is defended from high waves and strong wind. You can notice from sea very scenic view to the old bishop castle and to the silhouette of all town, including new spahotels.

Abruka is one of few Estonian islands, where the real village life has been remained. Futhermore to that Abruka has very unconventional nature and exciting legends.

During the Estonian winter we do several snowshoeing trips to watch wildlife and track wolf pack and lynx.

In the 10 th of January we were in Alutaguse with ETV to film wolf tracks. Of course, we needed to find the tracks first. Luckily our colleague saw fresh ones and we headed the area he pointed.

Matkad on küll tavapärastest Tallinna lahe tuuridest lühemad, ent käivad läbi Merepäevade keskmest - Lennusadamast. Lisaks on Merepäevade matkad ka poole odavamad Tallinna lahe matka tavalisest taksist, ehk siis kõigest 15 eurot. Merepäevade matkale saad ennast kirja panna meie plaaniliste matkade lehel.

Kohtume Merepäevadel!

Valgekraeks kutsume ühte noort isakaru, keda on vaatlusonni juures nähtud viimasel paaril aastal.

Valgekrae iseloomulikuks tunnuseks on suured heledamad laigud kaela külgedel, kusjuures kaela ülemine osa on tume ja kui ta ette kummardub, siis on kuklal näha kontrastne lai must triip. Valgekraed on aina raskem ära tunda, sest tema valge krae tuhmub tasapisi. See on pruunkarude puhul normaalne, karupoegadele tavalised valged kaelarõngad kaovad täiskasvanuks saades. Õnneks on Valgekrael veel mõned iseloomulikud tunnused: ümar pea, „sile soeng“ ja üsna töntsakas kehakuju. Selle pätsu vanus võiks olla ca 4 aastat. Noored isakarud hakkavad pulmades käima umbes 5 aastaselt. Me pole Valgekraed koos emasega näinud, kuigi sel aastal oli ta pulmade tippajal paar nädalat vaateväljast kadunud.

Valgekraest tegi hiljuti toreda pildi loodusfotograaf Remo Savisaar http://blog.moment.ee/2013/06/pruunkaru-brown-bear-ursus-arctos-3.html

Valgekraed arvutiekraanil näha, pildistada ja filmida saab Looduskalendri karukaamerast, oma silma ja kaameraga tekib selleks võimalus Alutaguse karuonnides http://natourest.ee/
